Why an electric car's state of charge can be useful on VistaBoard and which privacy and API points matter.
If you drive an electric car, you know the question: how full is the battery and is it enough for tomorrow? Usually, you open the car app. But on a wall display in the hallway or kitchen, the state of charge can be even more practical.
A Tesla widget on VistaBoard could show current battery percentage, estimated range, charging status, charging power and planned charging completion. You would immediately see whether the car is ready when walking past.
This becomes especially interesting together with PV and wallbox data. If VistaBoard already shows solar production, home consumption, grid draw and wallbox status, the vehicle battery naturally belongs next to it.
Technically, this requires a secure connection to the vehicle API or a local service that provides vehicle data. Tesla has APIs and third-party solutions, but credentials and tokens must be handled very carefully.
That is why such a widget should always be optional. Nobody should have to enter car data just to use VistaBoard as a calendar. If you want it, you enable it. If not, the widget stays hidden.
The display should also stay calm. A large alarm is rarely useful. Clear values are better: battery 72 percent, charging at 6.8 kW, finished around 10:30 PM. A small note could appear if the car is not plugged in and tomorrow starts early.
For households with dynamic electricity prices, the widget can become even more useful. If electricity is cheap or PV surplus is available, it becomes easier to decide when charging makes sense.
Privacy remains important. Vehicle data can reveal more than battery level: depending on the API, location, mileage or vehicle status may be included. VistaBoard should therefore store and show only the values that are actually needed.
Bottom line: Tesla battery state on a wall display is more than a nice extra. Combined with PV, wallbox and calendar information, it can make daily life with an electric car much easier to understand.
