Step by step to your own wall display with Raspberry Pi, monitor and VistaBoard.
Building your own smart home display is easier than most people think. With a Raspberry Pi, a monitor and the right software, you can set up a permanently running wall display in less than an hour. Here is a practical guide with specific recommendations.
Shopping list: Raspberry Pi 4 or 5 with at least 2 GB RAM, an official USB-C power supply, a microSD card with at least 16 GB, an HDMI cable and a monitor with VESA mount. For the display, 24 to 27 inches in portrait mode is recommended. Total cost is typically between $120 and $200 if you do not already own a monitor. Often an old monitor from storage works perfectly fine.
Step 1: Download the VistaBoard image. The current image is available on vista-board.com or GitHub. It is a ready-made SD card file that includes everything: operating system, browser, autostart and the VistaBoard software.
Step 2: Flash the image to microSD. Download and install Raspberry Pi Imager. Select the downloaded file under the custom image option and write it to the microSD card. This takes about 5 minutes.
Step 3: Assemble the Raspberry Pi. Insert the microSD, connect the HDMI cable to the monitor, plug in the power supply. The Pi boots automatically and shows the VistaBoard onboarding on screen after a short moment.
Step 4: Complete the onboarding. The guided setup asks for Wi-Fi credentials, location for weather display, desired calendars and preferred layout. iCloud calendars can be added via an ICS link, Google calendars via the calendar URL. After a few minutes, the display shows calendars, weather and photos.
Step 5: Mount the monitor on the wall. Attach a VESA wall mount in portrait orientation. Secure the Raspberry Pi behind the monitor with a small bracket or velcro strips. Run cables through a slim cable channel to the nearest outlet. From the front, the result looks clean and tidy.
Optional extensions: if you have a Fronius solar system, enter the inverter IP address in the settings menu. VistaBoard then shows PV generation, consumption, grid draw and home battery charge level. Tibber electricity prices can be added via an API token. RSS feeds for news and quotes can also be configured.
Common issues and solutions: if the screen stays black, the microSD card was usually not written correctly. If Wi-Fi does not connect, try an Ethernet cable. If a calendar does not appear, the ICS link is often incorrect. The VistaBoard FAQ and support help with specific questions.
Power consumption: a Raspberry Pi 4 uses about 3 to 5 watts in continuous operation. A 24-inch monitor uses 15 to 25 watts. Together that is less than 30 watts, well under $10 in electricity costs per year for continuous operation.
