Why a Linux Mini-PC is a strong alternative to Raspberry Pi for your VistaBoard wall display.
VistaBoard does not only run on Raspberry Pi. If you want more performance or already have a Mini-PC, you can install VistaBoard just as easily on an Intel NUC, Beelink, Geekom, MinisForum or any other Mini-PC with Debian or Ubuntu.
The advantage of a Mini-PC over the Raspberry Pi is mainly performance. Pages load faster, animations run smoother and larger displays with higher resolution are driven without issues. Many Mini-PCs are fanless and just as quiet as a Raspberry Pi.
Installation on a Mini-PC is very simple: install Debian or Ubuntu, open a terminal and run three commands. First download the install script: curl -fsSL https://www.vista-board.com/downloads/vistaboard-install.sh -o vistaboard-install.sh. Then install: sudo bash vistaboard-install.sh. Finally reboot: sudo reboot. After restarting, VistaBoard starts automatically in kiosk mode.
Which Mini-PCs work well? Intel NUC Mini-PCs are compact, powerful and widely available. Beelink offers affordable models starting at around $130. Geekom and MinisForum have fanless variants that are especially quiet. Even older thin clients or used Mini-PCs with Intel processors work excellently.
Another advantage: Mini-PCs often have built-in Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, USB 3.0 and sometimes even dual HDMI outputs. The display connects directly without adapters or converters. Most Mini-PCs also support VESA mounting and can be hidden behind the monitor just like a Raspberry Pi.
Power consumption and cost: a modern Mini-PC at idle uses between 6 and 15 watts — slightly more than a Raspberry Pi, but still very efficient. At an electricity price of $0.15 per kWh, that is less than $20 per year for continuous operation.
Who should choose a Mini-PC? Anyone using a large display of 32 inches or more, anyone who prefers faster page loading, or anyone who already has a Mini-PC at home. The Raspberry Pi remains the cheapest option, but the Mini-PC offers a better experience at only slightly higher cost.
VistaBoard automatically detects whether it is running on a Raspberry Pi or a Mini-PC. All features are identical: calendars, weather, photos, PV data, wallbox, Tibber electricity prices and widgets. The only difference is the hardware behind it.
