With a used 21-inch HDMI display, a Raspberry Pi and VistaBoard, you can build a smart wall calendar on a very small budget.
A digital wall calendar does not have to be an expensive premium product. If you look around, you can often build a very usable setup surprisingly cheaply. A used 21-inch display with HDMI can sometimes be found on eBay, local classifieds or marketplace platforms for under 20 USD. A used Raspberry Pi can often be found for around 40 USD.
That means the core hardware can cost around 60 USD if you already have a power supply, HDMI cable and mount, or buy them used as well. This is one of the reasons VistaBoard is interesting for beginners: you can start with existing or used hardware and upgrade later.
The most important requirement is HDMI. Older displays without HDMI can sometimes be used with adapters, but a monitor or TV with direct HDMI input is easier and more reliable. For wall mounting, VESA is practical, but not absolutely required if the display stands safely on a sideboard, shelf or simple mount.
For the Raspberry Pi, older hardware can be enough for a simple calendar setup. A Raspberry Pi 3 or 4 is sufficient for many use cases, while a Pi 5 feels smoother and is more future-proof. A stable power supply, a good microSD card and reliable Wi-Fi or Ethernet are more important than buying the most expensive hardware.
The biggest advantage of a low-cost DIY setup is that you can test whether a digital wall display really fits your everyday life. Does a calendar in the kitchen or hallway actually help? Are appointments, weather, bin collection, photos or PV data really noticed? If yes, you can always upgrade to a nicer frame or larger display later.
VistaBoard is designed for exactly these setups. The software runs locally on the Raspberry Pi, starts in kiosk mode and shows calendars, weather, photos, news and optional energy widgets. Setup is guided step by step without needing to write code.
Even visually, old hardware can look surprisingly good. A black monitor works well with a dark layout, while a bright frame fits nicely into a kitchen or living space. With portrait orientation, suitable layouts and clean cable routing, a used display can look much more polished than its price suggests.
With new hardware, it now gets even cheaper via VistaBoard Light (currently in beta): this lean edition runs on the Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W, the smallest Pi with Wi-Fi from around $20. Together with a microSD card, a micro-USB power supply and a mini-HDMI adapter, the complete hardware costs roughly $25 to $40. Light deliberately shows only the essentials: calendar, clock, weather and a daily picture. So if you prefer not to buy used, this is the cheapest entry point with brand-new hardware.
Bottom line: the cheapest way to build an electronic calendar is either a used HDMI display plus Raspberry Pi, or a new Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W with VistaBoard Light. In both cases you get a wall display for little money that can replace a paper calendar, weather station, photo frame and small reminder notes.
